Thomas Harb, Editor-in-Chief

Thomas Harb is a junior majoring in linguistics and anthropology, with a certificate in folklore. Although he is not pursuing a degree in history, it remains one of his primary academic interests, especially its interface with other disciplines. His other interests include the languages and cultures of Northern Europe and Central Asia. He works on the editorial team at the UW Press, and as a documenter for the Center for the Study of Upper Midwestern Cultures. He enjoys cooking, watching TV, and playing contrabass balalaika in the UW Russian Folk Orchestra.

Zhengzai “Charles” Pei, Editor-in-Chief

Charles Pei is a graduating senior at UW-Madison. His majors are history and political science. His primary area of interest is the history of crime in contemporary China. Charles is currently working on his senior thesis, which explores the origins and socioeconomic impacts of organized crime in China’s neoliberal era using a combination of oral history and local archives. More broadly, Charles is interested in histories of institutions, thoughts, gender, and labor in modern East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Americas. After he graduates, Charles hopes to attend history/area studies MA and PhD programs. Beyond academics, Charles’ favorite hobbies include watching films, jogging, and reading.

Avery Beirne, Editor

Avery Beirne is a graduating senior majoring in history with certificates in medieval studies and classical studies. Her main area of interest is Medieval European History, with a specific focus on The Wars of the Roses and the Tudor Period. After graduation, Avery is planning on taking a gap year in order to get some work experience before pursuing a Masters degree. Outside of academics, Avery enjoys cooking new recipes, reading, crafting, and spending time with friends.

Grace Pietruszka, Editor

Grace Pietruszka is a graduating senior, majoring in art history and anthropology. Her interests include the captivating world of European Renaissance paintings, where the convergence of artistic brilliance and historical context has always fascinated her. Northern Renaissance artist, Hieronymus Bosch, fascinates her with his imaginative symbolism and human body depictions. Beyond academic endeavors, Grace finds joy in crafting, reading, and watching films. Looking ahead, Grace’s aspirations align with a future in art museums and/or galleries, where she hopes to contribute to the preservation and exhibition of artistic treasures, bridging the gap between academia and public appreciation.

Emmett Robison, Editor

Emmett Robison is a freshman majoring in political science and history with a certificate in classical studies. His interests include the Cold War and its ripple effects on contemporary politics, the politics of Rome’s transition from a Republic to an Empire, and the correlation between quality of United States history education and political ideology. He hopes to pursue a career in academia and continue studying the connections between history and politics. Outside of academics, Emmett can be found singing with Jewop A Capella, giving tours of the campus, and enjoying the nature of the Madison area.

Sophie Stein, Editor

Sophie Stein is a graduating senior majoring in art history and anthropology. Her primary area of interest is medieval European history, particularly with regards to Ireland and the United Kingdom. Sophie is currently working on her senior thesis, which explores the enigmatic marginal imagery of a Christian prayer book produced at the turn of the fourteenth century in England. This project combines her fascination with medieval manuscripts, monstrosity, imagination, and dreaming. Sophie is also a Curatorial Assistant at the Chazen Museum of Art. After graduation, she hopes to work at an art museum or gallery. Outside of academics, Sophie enjoys cheering for Badger sports teams, crafting, and cooking.

Rose Weithaus, Editor

Rose Weithaus is a graduating senior at UW-Madison, majoring in political science and history with a certificate in public policy. Her primary areas of interest are Renaissance era Europe, the founding of the United States, and US foreign policy of the mid to late 1900s, including WWII and the Cold War. Rose also works as a Mosse Oral History Project Intern, where she contributes to the growing oral history library at UW-Madison, specifically those related to German social and cultural history. She recently had a piece published on the Mosse blog. After graduation, Rose hopes to work on a political campaign prior to attending law school. Outside of history, Rose enjoys attending Badger sporting events, trying new restaurants, and reading.

Tianchen “Mark” Zhang, Editor

Tianchen Zhang is a junior studying history with a concentration in East Asian history and Cold War topics. This year, Tianchen engaged in research focused on Sino-American relations and worked as a journalist, covering global political news.
